18 Original Sun Greatest Hits $13.96 This 18-song CD contains Jerry Lee Lewis’ best rock & roll sides from the 240 or so tracks that he recorded for Sun Records. If that sounds like the very tiny tip of a very large iceberg — it is. But this 1984 compilation remains 40 of rock & roll’s hottest minutes, revealing as much about Jerry Lee Lewis as it’s possible to learn from watching the movie Great Balls of Fire! The hit singles and best B-sides are assembled around the core of his 1957 Sun album — a great, and instructive, musical decision. Lewis’ rocking version of “Jambalaya” and his ivory-based rendition of “Matchbox,” “Big Blon’ Baby,” “Big Legged Woman,” and “It’ll Be Me,” are all prime examples of his fiercely sexual personality, pounding away on those keys and whooping and hollering like a white version of Piano Red. Equally important, “Crazy Arms” held what would prove to be the key to his professional salvation: a distinct way with a country song that didn’t blow the song right apart and also didn’t lose the rock ‘n roll audience. A big hunk of this stuff is available on the Sun debut album, which should be heard at least once (assuming one can’t afford the Bear Family label’s Classic box with his whole Sun output), but this is the place to start. The mid-’80s digital transfer still sounds good; its quality proves that Rhino always gave good value to its customers. The guitars on “Put Me Down” and “Wild One” — yes, there is guitar on a lot of these sides — are nice and crunchy, even though they’re buried under the piano. American Folk Blues Festivals 1963-1966: The British Tours [DVD] $15.99 Like the previous three volumes of this superb series, American Folk Blues Festivals 1963-1966: The British Tours presents about 75 minutes of mid-’60s European television performances by blues legends. The only real difference is that all of these were filmed in England (hence the subtitle “The British Tours 1963-1966″), where appreciation of the blues was really taking off and, of course, making a big impression on the U.K. pop scene via artists like the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. While the word “legends” is thrown around a lot in reviewing vintage blues compilations, this is one instance where it’s not overhyping the case. Every single performer here is legendary. Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson were Chicago blues giants,; the more rural and rawer side of the form is caught by Lightnin’ Hopkins and Big Joe Williams; R&B is represented by Big Joe Turner, and soul by Sugar Pie DeSanto; and the blues’ roots in jazz and gospel are captured by Lonnie Johnson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe respectively. Every single performer here is caught, in well-preserved black-and-white footage, at or near the peak of his or her form, sometimes with some of their very most famous songs, whether it’s Waters doing “Got My Mojo Working,” Williams playing “Baby Please Don’t Go,” or Williamson singing “Bye Bye Bird.” That’s not even mentioning the top talents that can be seen as accompanists at various points, including bassist Willie Dixon, guitarists Hubert Sumlin and Otis Rush, and pianists Sunnyland Slim and Otis Spann. Although they’re mostly remembered today for their hit singles, Jay & the Americans were an early- to mid-’60s outfit brimming over with talent, and they made a string of delightful if not exactly profound albums that hold up surprisingly well some 40 years later. Jay and the Americans and Sunday and Me were two of them, from 1965 and 1966, respectively. In addition to the hit singles “Cara Mia” and “Only in America,” about half of Jay and the Americans plays like a lost Phil Spector production, and the rest is a leaner brand of pop/rock. Sunday and Me isn’t quite as distinctive, but in addition to its title song it offers the folk-rock-influenced “Why Can’t You Bring Me Home” (which could have been a great song for Johnny Rivers to cover); the towering vocal showcase “Maria”; a pair of pleasing group originals, “Baby Stop Your Cryin’” and the ebullient “She’s the Girl (That’s Messin’ Up My Mind)”; one achingly lyrical folk revival cover (“Chilly Winds”); and the group’s pleasingly embellished, spirited, and soulful rendition of the Rascals hit “Good Lovin’.” The digital mastering is a special treat, as neither of these albums has ever appeared on CD in the United States, and most of what’s here hasn’t been in print since the mid- to late ’60s. True, he’s had a lot of phases to his career and some ups and downs in life, but he’s such a total natural and so inspired in his work that you’ve got to wonder how he hasn’t gotten out on a high-end video before this. The primary bonus feature, “One On One With Dion,” is worth the price of admission by itself, capturing Dion on acoustic guitar, playing and discussing music (especially the blues) and his history (especially recollections of the tragic Winter Dance Party Tour of 1959, on which Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens were killed). He pays tribute to Bo Diddley, and is featured in a Dick Clark clip doing “Ruby Baby” in 1961 — these bonuses are attractive features of the DVD as well. The main program, running an hour, captures Dion doing solo acoustic blues, leading into the stage performance that opens with “I Wonder Why,” done in such a joyous and upbeat manner as to be totally, irresistibly seductive. The live stage performance is intercut with Dion’s commentary and solo acoustic illustrations of the music, and it is funny to hear him describe his sound as black blues “filtered through an Italian neighborhood,” because there’s little of the Italian influence left in his own playing or singing. It exceeds the only other notable Partridge Family Greatest Hits CD (1989) by over half-a-dozen tracks, and also contains a few of David Cassidy’s top solo sides as well. Copping pages from both the Monkees’ manufactured-for-TV songs, and the real-life pop/rock family, the Cowsills, the Partridge Family was a weekly prime time sitcom that ran on ABC-TV from September 25, 1970 through August 31, 1974. Further mimicking the Monkees phenomenon, primary cast members — in this case, Shirley Jones (vocals) and David Cassidy (vocals) — also served double duty as the Partridge Family’s lead vocalists. In all, between the years 1970 and 1974, eight long-players were issued by the “Family,” while Cassidy himself released an additional four solo efforts. The multimedia campaign ultimately yielded a consistently high-rated television program, as well as no less than nine Top 40 albums, and 11 Top 40 singles. Accompanying Cassidy and Jones were a veritable who’s who of studio heavyweights such as Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Carlton (guitar), Joe Osborne (bass), and Larry Knechtel (keyboards). They were joined by the painfully sweet backing vocals of the six-member Love Generation, who participated to some degree on every one of the Partridge Family’s LPs. USED: Baby Snakes [Video/DVD] $10.99 Just over a decade after Frank Zappa’s premature death (December 4, 1993) comes the long-awaited release of Baby Snakes on DVD. “A film about people who do stuff that is not normal” mostly refers to the rabid New York audience, although the bandmembers themselves and special deranged guest Roy Estrada also have their fun. The film itself is a mix of concert and backstage footage, along with some rehearsals and lots of disturbing, surreal, and brilliant clay animation courtesy of Bruce Bickford. This is the very young and very talented Sheik Yerbouti band, consisting of Patrick O’Hearn (bass), Adrian Belew (guitar), Tommy Mars (keyboards), Terry Bozzio (drums), Peter Wolf (more keyboards), and Ed Mann (percussion) in addition to Zappa on guitar and vocals. Baby Snakes does a great job of portraying the mixture of tightly rehearsed music, structured improvisation, and inspired spontaneity that made Zappa live shows such fun (and why many fans saw night after night of shows). The DVD adds only a few items to the full-length version of the film (running time over two and a half hours): the original film trailer, two television commercials that were prepared, and a tantalizing trailer for The Roxy Performances (curiously dated 1999). There are also extensive credits both for the original release of the film as well as for the DVD, and some artifacts like the Motion Picture Association of America’s certificate of an “R” rating. The packaging also contains a “secret dossier”-looking folder that has many of the credits, stills from the movie, and press clippings, as well as some copy that Zappa provided about the original release. There are some minor flaws in the film stock, but the sound is spectacular on this overdue re-release. Zappa fans rejoice!
